Lidar control and autonomous operation

The control system is derived from the VAHCOLI software and extended for EULIAA. It orchestrates:

  • Multi‑FOV operation: scanner switching between three telescopes every few seconds
  • Real‑time spectral stabilization of the laser and filters
  • High‑speed data acquisition and online processing to L1 products
  • Housekeeping and safety: weather station, ADS‑B receiver, IR sky camera, motion sensor above the telescopes, UPS, and remote interlocks

The control software runs on a low‑power PC to minimize heat load in the housing. A real‑time scheduler manages ultra‑fast feedback loops for cavity control and filter locking, which has improved spectral stability significantly compared to earlier systems. All safety‑relevant devices are continuously monitored; any fault leads to immediate interruption of laser emission and a transition to a safe mode. Remote access is via VPN behind a hardware firewall, and essential functions can also be operated via the electrical control cabinet if the control PC fails.

The complete control chain, including spectral stabilization, scanner control and safety logic, has been tested first on the IR lidar and then ported to the UV system.
